RapidEye for National & Regional Mapping Programs
The adoption of RapidEye for various baseline and monitoring programs is growing. Examples now exist in Australia, South America and Asia.
With the RapidEye constellation now in operation for 2.5 years, a valuable archive of data has been amassed.
Ten Reasons to use RapidEye for a National & Regional Mapping Program
- Spectral bandset designed for enhanced and improved vegetation discrimination and mapping
- Improved multi-spectral resolution for enhanced vegetation unit delineation and mapping
- Proven capacity to accommodate single-season image acquisition over regional extents
- Increased multi-temporal imaging alternatives for cloud-reduction processing (and delivery of combi-tiles)
- Improved multi-temporal imaging alternatives for verification, including 'off-season' acquisition
- Proven commitment by supplier to build National-scale image libraries across Australia
- Proven supplier support for image evaluation and R&D initiatives
- Minimal effort required to adapt some existing processing methodologies to RapidEye image specifications
- Proven ability to provide rapid-response imaging options
- A constellation of 5 imaging satellites 'at your service'!
The illustrations below showcase the frequency of RapidEye imagery with less than 20% cloud, over various parts of Australia. For example - some of the shades of blue indicate areas which have been imaged 6-8 times this year , while areas in yellow have been imaged about 20 times in the timeframe nominated.
We invite you to submit areas and timeframes for speculative image acquisition to ensure suitable imagery might be available for your upcoming projects
To obtain RapidEye sample data or a quote, simply email us.
For more information, review our RapidEye webpage. You can also have a look at the official RapidEye website.

Project: Rapid response image products for Queensland 2011 Disasters
AAM supplied rapid response aerial imagery to the Queensland Government for a number of Qld disasters this year. From inland floods to post Tropical Cyclone Yasi, rapid response image products were captured within hours of the disasters and supplied within several days for the priority areas.
These rapid response, post disaster image products were one of the vital foundation datasets embraced for immediate disaster assessment and emergency response efforts by Qld Fire and Rescue Service, Emergency Management Qld, Police and other agencies.
Teams of AAM personnel worked long hours for weeks on end. The aerial survey teams worked in difficult conditions to successfully exploit the small gaps in the poor weather conditions to capture imagery while office based teams worked in parallel to process the data for delivery within 2 days of capture for the priority areas.
Rob Thomas and Greg Itzstein collected the framed certificate on behalf of all AAM staff involved in these projects.
Project Background
- December 31 - Town of Emerald and adjacent flooded highway imaged
- January 4-8 - Surat, St George and other sites imaged at peak flood
- February 5 - Post Tropical Cyclone Yasi imagery over 23 sites
- April - Roma and flooded surrounds

Victoria: Winter 2011 image capture almost complete
The constellation of RapidEye satellites has been successfully imaging Victoria over the last few weeks resulting in impressive new imagery now available in archive.
Gail Kelly, AAM Satellite Team Leader, advises "the key benefits of the RapidEye satellites are readily illustrated by the recent capture over Victoria, i.e. large areas are imaged in a short timeframe with a impressive 5m ortho product as the end result. With a data capture capacity of 4 million sqkm per day, RapidEye is made for projects requiring multispectral data over large areas quickly or frequently."
Kelly goes on to say, "The key features of RapidEye data can be pretty easily summed up: 5 identical satellites with 5 spectral bands producing 5m orthoimage products".
Overviews of individual scenes are easily accessible using the online search tool, EyeFind.
For further information, review the AAM RapidEye webpage.

800km Corridor Project: LiDAR & Imagery
LiDAR derived asset and built environment datasets will be generated by AAM over transmission lines and easements for a client this season. The object is to establish accurate spatial relationships between the ground, vegetation, conductors and earth wires along these transmission lines. Data gathered shall be used to produce accurate engineering design models of the transmission lines and its corridor for the assessment of transmission capacity.
This is one of many LiDAR projects underway in Australia utilising the powerful Optech LiDAR sensor.
The colourised point cloud of LIDAR strikes in the image shown, clearly highlights the vegetation in green and residential areas in shades of grey and white. The classified conductors have been classified in yellow and blue to enhance their appearance on this image.
The benefits of LIDAR data are being embraced by many energy clients requiring: speed; accuracy; minimal or no ground survey; and a variety of derived products for the natural and built environments.
More information is available on our LiDAR webpage

Port Moresby from Space - New 50cm satellite imagery available
The GeoEye-1 satellite has recently imaged the Port Moresby region over the last few months and obtained some remarkable, cloud free datasets. High resolution, 50cm image datasets are generated through the integration of the panchromatic and multispectral information collected by the GeoEye-1 satellite.
GeoEye satellites are collecting data from an orbit ~680km above the earth and circling the earth 15 times a day.
The full library of existing archive data can be discovered online. Image overviews (such as the one shown below) are available from the publicly available, archive search tool.
Enquiries can be directed to AAM Pty Ltd, a key GeoEye Partner for Australia, via email.
Interactive samples of imagery and other sensor information can be found on our GeoEye webpage.

RapidEye imagery: 2 billion sq km in archive!
RapidEye, a leader in wide area, repetitive coverage of Earth through its constellation of satellites and advanced remote sensing-based services, announced today that it has imaged more than two billion square kilometers of satellite imagery now in its archive.
"This is a wonderful milestone in our history," commented Wolfgang Biedermann, RapidEye's CEO. "Two billion square kilometers of high resolution data is an extraordinary amount of imagery. To put this into perspective, the landmass of the entire world is approximately 150 million square kilometers; which means we have the equivalent of 13 full coverages of the Earth, and this increases daily. This is an excellent example of the imaging power of our system."
Last week, RapidEye released its new online archive tool, "EyeFind". Once the relevant images are located, an inquiry can be sent through EyeFind for a quote and estimated delivery time.
RapidEye invites everyone to try EyeFind to search and browse the imagery collected in the last two years, including the newest collections from the last 48 hours. You can search the EyeFind website now.

Diverse applications of RapidEye satellite data this year
Given the series of natural events in the world this year, RapidEye data has been deployed successfully in a variety of applications in our region, ranging from damage extent and intensity assessment to routine monitoring of commercial operations, for example:
- Flood extent mapping in Southern Australia
- Post-flood agricultural damage assessment in Queensland
- Post-cyclone damage assessment in northern Australia
- Monitoring of forestry operations in NZ and exotic Asian locations
Download the NZ Journal of Forestry article: "Applying Satellite Imagery for Forest Planning" (PDF 3.0MB) - Environmental monitoring by energy and mining companies
"The extensive and recent nature of RapidEye archive imagery, combined with its 5m orthoimage resolution and the 5 spectral bands, has proven popular and an effective data source, says Gail Kelly, Leader of the AAM Satellite Team. "Many people are now utilising the recently released beta RapidEye archive search tool called EyeFIND and formulating new projects they can undertake. It is an exciting time for AAM and RapidEye with its constellation of 5 identical satellites".
Many of AAM's clients are now using the new RapidEye archive search tool, “EyeFIND”, to conceptualise new projects which can benefit from the compelling imagery solutions from RapidEye.
