LiDAR Terrain Data

Several years ago, Pine Rivers Shire Council - PRSC (now Moreton Bay Regional Council) undertook a LiDAR survey of the Eastern portion of the Shire. The LiDAR dataset was so valuable it was decided to obtain coverage for the entire area.
PRSC commissioned AAM to provide terrain data for a range of key Council activities:
- as a basis for flood modelling in various creek catchments;
- to support planning, investigation and preliminary design activities;
- for production of hard copy maps, and digital map products for sale to the public.
“A fundamental requirement was that the data products were presented as a number of consistent, coincident and seamless data sets” said Allan Herring, Principal Engineer Waterways and Assets, PRSC. The end product was to be topologically structured and attributed for storage in the ESRI GIS of PRSC.
The data products for this 628 sqkm area were:
- Digital Terrain Model (DTM) of thinned ground data;
- Topologically structured 0.5 metre contour database; and
- DTM as a 5 metre Grid.
The DTM specification in key areas of the Shire was for 90% of points to be within 0.15m of true elevation.
