GIS brings sustainability goals within reach

With GIS Day being celebrated this week, AAM explores how Geographic Information Systems (GIS) play a major role in helping member countries and organisations to reach the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals.

In September 2015 all UN member states adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which has the 17 Sustainable Development Goals at its heart.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

The goals are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – to ‘promote prosperity while protecting the planet’. They recognise that ending poverty must go together with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.

Geospatial data is used by governments and global organisations to inform policies, planning and enables decision making. The use of GIS enables  organisations to better identify where resources need to be invested to create stronger communities. This includes delivery of vital services such as disaster relief; medical aid; education; food and water, while guiding where job-creating projects such as infrastructure and renewable energy should be located.

As part of the goals, geospatial information and GIS tools are shared to foster data equality amongst member countries. All countries can collect, analyse and share Sustainable Development Goal data which leads to better planning, policy and decision-making.
