Surveying Sydney Trains


Woolpert have worked alongside Sydney Trains for over two decades providing Detailed Services Search (DSS) surveys of Greater Sydney’s rail network. Their purpose is to provide accurate representations of underground services for the network’s future design.

Woolpert is currently Western Sydney’s preferred data supplier for previously surveyed Sydney areas. Sydney Trains requires a specific data acquisition method and plan production.

We’ve developed a dynamic internal QA sub-system including a combination of procedural documents, code lists, checklists and spreadsheets specifically for Sydney Trains’ DSS surveys.  Our drafting team have also spent considerable time onsite assisting with the surveys to better understand the data’s nature.

The Situation

Limited documentation is available for contractors to plan for and achieve Sydney Trains’ standards. This requires competent and reliable service providers to deliver highly useful information. There are also always multiple DSS projects simultaneously underway at varying stages creating challenges including:

  • Priorities management
  • Efficient project information flow




Woolpert incorporated all changes to standards, requirements or procedures into our processes and QA systems. Regular client meetings also allowed both Sydney Trains and Woolpert to discuss quality and scheduling issues.

Woolpert staff were trained and briefed on requirements prior to the project’s commencement and any changes instigated by the client were communicated to our team.

Woolpert’s internal QA system includes a tracking spreadsheet, allowing staff to view current projects’ critical details.
